Happy New Year dear friends and fans of 2 Note!

Here’s to new beginnings… It’s that time of year when many of you are perhaps assessing, detoxing, aspiring, resetting. Words like resolution, intention, goal and habit are fresh on your mind as you embrace 2017 with renewed strength, conviction, and perseverance. For the past several years I’ve chosen to meditate on a certain word over the course of the new year, rather than declaring resolutions. I think about the things I feel challenged by in life and within myself, and I also think about how I desire to evolve in this world. In essence, how can I be better to myself and also better for the world I live in.

This year’s word is MINDFULNESS. I know I know… It’s a little jargon-y and overused among the latest and greatest in meditation and holistic well being. Still, there is a reason it’s being used so much and so often. Our world can easily be a technology driven web of chaos leading to anxiety, poor habits and feelings of, “Am I eating the right thing?” and “Should I be using this moisturizer or that one?” and “Will this make me look younger?” You get the idea I’m driving home here. I’m exhausted just thinking about the sheer amount of information (and misinformation) that flashes across our screens daily. In embracing mindfulness in 2017 I am reaching out to you to share wisdom and ideas for making healthy choices for yourself, your family and friends, and our planet.

READ YOUR LABELS! 

Adhere to this rule: less is more.

The fewer ingredients, and the more pronounceable they are, the better.

Disheartening trivia: on average women add more than 200 chemicals to their skin daily, and more than 60% of these chemicals are then absorbed into the bloodstream.

If you’ve had a conversation with me, you know that I’m quite a nerd when it comes to ingredients. I always get excited when a customer comes into the shop and starts reading labels. I am a label reader. I want to know what I am putting in and on my body, and quite frankly, I want you to know too. The ripple effect here is infinite. How much time do you spend thinking about how a product was made and what the origins of each ingredient are? I spend a lot of time on this, but that’s part of my job and my passion in creating healthy products for you. Please don’t beat yourself up if you’re not in the habit of turning the bottle, package, jar or carton over - you’ve been trained to follow a lead on the latest and the best products for your skin, and all the tantalizing rhetoric is on the front of the label! Just how many products are there that are firming, toning, lifting, tightening, lightening and age defying?? So. Many. The media and large scale marketing corporations are constantly injecting you with ideas about what you need and fears about why you need it.

My New Year's wish for you... I want you to feel safe, positive, free and beautiful. By practicing a little mindfulness when choosing products for your skin you will gain so much… knowledge, peace of mind, consciousness about who and what you are supporting, and a healthier outlook when it comes to your care for yourself and your impact in the greater world. Soooo, in the spirit of the phrase, “If you know better you do better” I want to pass along some basic information on ingredients so that you can either pat yourself on the back for already knowing whether it’s good or bad, or begin to flip that bottle over and scan for beneficial vs. toxic ingredients.


Let's start with MINERAL OIL

Other terms for it: liquid petroleum, paraffin, white mineral oil, petroleum jelly, petrolatum.

What is it? Mineral oil is a substance derived from petroleum and therefore comes from the petroleum industry. It is widely used in the cosmetic and skincare industry since it's both lightweight and inexpensive.

It's best not to use products containing mineral oil for three reasons.

1. It is likely to clog your pores. Ew. Oh! Here's a little kitchen skincare remedy for this problem:

Clogged Pore Exfoliating Scrub Recipe: 1 teaspoon baking soda + 1 teaspoon raw honey

Directions: mix ingredients together, steam face with a warm washcloth then apply mixture to face in circular motions for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. May be used up to two times per week.

That was fun, wasn't it? OK back to mineral oil and why it's not good...

2. It's possible that it's contaminated with carcinogenic compounds. Cancer causing = not good. Side note: paraffin candles create carcinogens when they're burning - it's like smoking cigarettes in the house. This fact really takes away from the glowing ambiance, doesn't it? Beeswax candles, on the other hand, purify the air while burning. Gotta love those bees and make sure we take good care of them!

3. It's not beneficial for your skin. Sure, it feels slippery, gives lips a glossy look, and provides a short term protective barrier for your skin, but ultimately there are plenty of other ingredients that do these things AND also contain vital nutrients for your skin. Mineral oil is the skincare equivalent of eating empty carbs.

If you begin to read ingredients when shopping for skincare products you'll be practicing the same mindfulness you use when you choose healthy, organic food for your internal nutrition.
